sukhumvit soi 62
Hello sara – you can have rivacy by going to ajarn thoy once and ask him for a private session
this will be by going to him for the tattoo at about 10 30 am 2 hours before he opens the samnak
but i advize to go one time to talk and ask for the appointment first . if not he might not be there when you go.
Hello Spencer, very nice site I must say! I am from Singapore and I just had my 1st Sakyant 2 weeks ago by AC Piak. Through this site I came about to know the true meanings and origins of Sakyant as well as what my yant means.
Not to mention this site greatly increased my knowledge of Theravada Buddhism! I am planning to get a ‘Gao Yord’ yant from AC Thoy/Por Gae Lersi Dai Fai during my trip next mth which is from January 15 – January 23. Can I request for him to be possesed by Phra Lersi Dai Fai and sak for me? Could u kindly advice me on the price? Thanks a lot in advance!
yes he can do with the spirit of Por hae too.. only thing is it is better do go on a day when many devotees are there which is when he will “long song” (let Por gae Enter) he stopped doing it daily as apart from the fact that he decided that it is a bit of an abuse of the Devas to call them all the time, he was also feeling extremely tired as the effect of having another being inside youn is like two litres of water in a one liter bottle! very compressed. And he feels old and haggard of course when he enters him because Por gae is a very old man with a bent back so his bones become all aching and his back hurts. if you wanted him to do it in a private session then i think you would need to make a donation that is fitting as well as make a decent offering of a good amount fo flowers incense betel nut, tobacco and fruits etc for Por Gae too. I could ask him for you and arrange appointment you can post your mobile number and ill fone you if you like as i am in Singapore.
In fact actually i am trying to prepare a visit for AC Thoy to come to make sak yant in Singapore so you can tell your friends too as i will need as many people to make appointments for him when he comes so that his journey is worth it.
Hello Spencer, congratulations for your site. You´ve done a spectacular job.
I need your help, I will be in February in Thailand (Bangkok – Chang Mai). And I want me a sak yant, so where do you recommend to go, besides and I’m looking for a triple gem tattoo, where can I find the designs and their meaning).
Thank you very much!
Hey Spencer, Thanks for the reply.Could u pls let me know when will u be arranging for AC Thoy to come over to singapore? Thanks
Hi Spencer,
I’m in Bangkok for a few days and just found your site; it’s an excellent service you’re providing. I’m looking for a sak yant. Spent a bit of time looking for a true spiritual arjan but have not been successful. I would like to consult with you about your master or others around Bangkok.
Best Regards.
John
Can you explain to me what your concept of a “Spiritual Ajarn” is? Because depending on what you hold to be a spiritual person shall influence my answer. Here is my answer for now as far as i can say without knowing what you mean by “spiritual”;
Although i am a student of sak yant and have had teachers in the tradition, the only Master who has taught me anything spiritual is Hlwong Pi Pant. By spiritual i mean how one should advance in becomeing a better person and controlling oneself and ones behaviour. As to inner knowledge in a mystical sense of the word, i have never recieved a decent teaching on that matter from any sak yant master. To be quite honest, i have yet to meet a sak yant master apart from Ajarn Thoy who actually has shown me convincing evidence that he has practised or attained any knowledge or ability other than what can be learned from books and easily spoken about by any scholar, regardless of being able to do what one speaks about or not.
The real spiritual teachings which have been bestowed upon me have come from two main sources, neither of them being sak yant masters.
1. Buddhist monks in the Thai Forest Kammathana tradition who have given me instruction in meditation and mindfulness/vipassana practise (both as a layman and also as i was a monk)
2. My own efforts in applying those teachings
If it is spiritual knowledge and teachings you seek, then i advise you to study the dhamma, and attend a decent retreat such as the ten day retreat at Wat Suan Mokkh in Surat Thani (just turn up on the first of any month – dont take any walkman, books or anything as you will have to remain in solitude in the forest hut apart from daily meditation and dhamma instruction once a day – the aim of the retreat is to encounter what is within, for which reason you are not permitted any books or music etc – take white clothing)
http://www.suanmokkh.org/ret/retreat01.htm
You can also attend Wat pah Nanachat
http://www.watpahnanachat.org/stay.php
This temple will not provide you with dhamma teachings rather will allow you to get a taste of what it is to keep precepts and livve in a temple and taste the experience – you will howver also encounter yourself in ways you hadnt thought of (you will get frustrated and dissatisfied with things outside of yourself, but hopefully come to realise that the real cause of your dissatisfaction is within your own heart)
If you are already aware of how to practise dhamma/vipassana and know how to keep the precepts and rules of conduct of a Thai temple then i can also recommend wat nong pah pong (only Thai speaking monks there) In that place it is a massive forest enclave and you will have to wear white, do the temple chores and attend both morning and evening prayers with one hour meditation at each prayer time (no instruction, only do it yourself)
As to sak yant masters – they offer you sacred yantra which you can use for 2 purposes
1. magical protection,health luck etc
2. use your respect for the sacredness of the yantra to make you mindful and try to behave within the precepts and be a better person – this is the real and wise reason for wearing a sak yant – just to get an invincibility spell or something to make you sexy or rich is basically an ignorant desire which is based in self cherishing and is unfortunately the mainstream reason which drives most people to get a sak yant.
I have remained neutral and not involved in voicing my opinions on this over the years but am now at a point where i feel to preserve the real tradition of sak yant and also to protect and promote the dhamma, that i must clear this matter up.
A sak yant master does not these days have to be a master of meditation nor know much about dhamma – 80 percent of the sak yant ajarn i have met know in fact very little about the dhamma and only few have really practised meditation. I myself have only ever seen one ajarn meditate and that is ajarn Thoy – Hlwong Pi pant meditates too because he is a monk and has to as part of his routine so that goes without saying. To practise sak yant you are not required to know the dhamma – you are required to know designs and memorize the khmer lettering and know how to chant the kata, and know what purpose each design is for.. this is a matter of memorization, and requires no wisdom to achieve.
The word ajarn means teacher and is used in respect for anyone who has attained a level of masterdon in his trade – sak yant is a manual trade of tattooing and also involves years of study and practise to learn all the mantras and designs by heart as well as their meanings. But dear sir, a person who can recite the Buddhist sutras by heart does not necessarily understand what they mean or have attained the real inner knowledge spoken of within those sutras.
It is a common mistake that people assume that a master of sak yant is some kind of mega enlightened guru in his own right.
This is simply not true.. most laymen ajarns get on their motorbike or in their car and go home to wife and kids and take a stroll in the shopping mall or go to a concert after work, and at most simply keep the 5 precepts, and often not even that.
Just ask around how many people have seen their ajarn go to a dhamma course or take a journey to the forest for meditation?
I bet you wont find many who say yes they have seen this.
So.. spiritual ajarn?
Im sorry there arent any i could really recommend. I recommend to go to a forest temple and find a monk who seems to speak very little and keep to himself – and there is where you might find a spiritual master.
Look for temples that are Vipassana based, do not make amulets, and do not do sak yant, dont have satellite tv markets and fairs in their courtyards, rather live in simplicity and do not advertise anything.
If you are looking for an ajarn who is compassionate and kind and has not selfish thoughts and turns the other cheek when hurt, helps the community with compassionate acts using the finds he makes from the sak yant, who lives simpy without desire.. then go to Hlwong Pi Pant – he is about the best i can recommend as “spiritual” as far as sak yant masters go.
One famous Ajarn i know always gets a bottle of Johnnie Walker out and drinks the whole bottle after work every day – when i began talking about the dhamma to him all he knew were the five precepts and said thats all that is needed (for the devotee, true, but his bottle of whisky proved he cant even keep them himself). When he gets a farang to visit all his thai devotees are sent away – for there is a big difference between 100 baht each and 8000 -30,000 which he will get from the one farang. This i find to be biased an selfish and shows disregard for his true and faithful Thai congregation in preference for a foreigner who perhaps does, or does not know and respect the spiritual side of the matter. This is happening more and more often in the lay ajarn places when westerners turn up. Such acts are proof of absence of spirituality as far as i am concerned, and i do not support such actions.
Hlwong Pi Pant will only rarely do this if he sees the foreigner has little time and there are many devotees in the queue, but normally all are treated equally in price as well as who comes first.
you can see him on this link
http://www.sak-yant.com/samnak-sak-yant/hlwong-pi-pant-wat-koh-poon/
If you are looking for a person well practised in magical techniques and expert in magical spell incantation, and also a very nice and friendly person, then go to Ajarn Thoy Dabos.
Getting a sak yant from any monk carries its blessings simply because amonk is practising renunciation and this in itself increases the purity involved.
Getting one froom a lay master is fine but if you wish to find one that is spiritual then that would involve hanging around a lot and seeing his practise and behaviour, asking questions to see if his answers are wise etc.. Sak yant has become big business these days and where there is shit, there awill always be flies buzzing around, and sak yant is no exception.
One thing you can be certain of though is that i never publish apage for an ajarn on the samnak sak pages here on sak-yant.com if i am aware of him being unsuitable. All Ajarn on sak-yant.com are at least known to be kind, not a rip off, and genuine practitioners with a genuine trajectory behind them. (well perhaps one exception who is known for being ultra expensive, but who’s career trajectory is long and genuine)..
If you want a short answer and wish to know who i recommend for sak yant then here;
LP Pant (Monk)
Ajarn Thoy Dabos (Ruesi)
Any Monk at Wat Bang Pra (especially LP Ya)
there are others who i could list but thats my toplist
I apologize in advance if my answers are not those which people wish to hear, but you have to realise that spirituality and saiyasart/len khong (magic/animism) are not necessarily the same.
For me spirituality means that which uplifts the spirit ans leads to inner knowledge and wisdom
That means the practise of the dhamma as far as i am concerned
Thank you for your detailed response; I’m very appreciative you explained this so succinctly. I agree it’s important that you stated your opinions on this matter and believe it will help others to better understand their own paths in relation to sak yant. We share the same definition of spirituality. I feel your two recommendations of sak yant masters are perfect for me, each offering elements that would suit what I’m looking for.
My wife and I visited a VERY famous arjan the other day and had an audience with his brother who was mediating the price on his behalf. The original price for a sak yant was 300,000 baht because I am a farrang. My wife who speakes Thai explained we don’t have anywhere near those resources and some bargaining ensued. He finally said instead of the original sak yant I wanted I could have another five stanza prayer (a very popluar sak yank ever since a famous Hollywood actress received it several years ago). The Thai price for a was 5,700 baht and the farrang price was 57,000. We were asked to go to the bank and come back with the money. This was still too expensive and felt we were just dollar signs in their eyes. It was a very disappointing situation because I had a lot of respect for this man and what he has gone through to get to this point in his life. Howver, it did not feel as there was any spiritual element present, just a desire to get money from farrangs.
Anyway, thank you again.
wow!
the fellow is even crazier than before.
I suppose that some people are still paying these ridiculous prices thats more expensive than the most expensive tattoo artist in the world (Filip Leu in Lausanne Switzerland) who is artistically the best in the world (matter of opinion). Filip charges this much for a whole back piece.
This 300 thousand baht would fill the backs of more than ten Farang at Ajarn Thoys even if you paid the full donation expected for Farang. And i assume you are not talking about a full backpiece, rather a large tattoo on the back (perhaps two tigers and a central yantra with hanuman?)
This makes this famous ajarn the most expensive tattoo artist in the world. As to the things this famous ajarn is supposed to have done to get to where he is.. the only proof is on the self claimed biography – there are no outside references made by other people as to whether the events happened or not.
This very famous ajarn was only ordained for a year or so as a monk apparently. It is sad but true that the most famous and successful people in life are not necessarily those who have made the most merit, rather it is usually those who have used hype and self promotion methods to get there.
The people with real merit usually stay quiet and practise with no desire to get to the peak of the mountain by using under the belt methods.
The rules of the game in the modern world to gain success are;
lie a lot
be dishonest
be selfish
be greedy
In this sense, the ajarn you mentioned is a master of masters
You are only one of many tens of people who have written to me in disappointment and who felt abused and disregarded/disrespected by this samnak – the ajarns younger brother is one of the most sarcastic and cheekiest people i have ever met and the most cheeky i have ever met in a samnak sak.
I havent been there in years because of the way they behave there – i once took a Vietnamese amulet seeker there and was asked to sell a 300 baht amulet for 38 thousand baht to them (i didn’t) and later, the Vietnamese amulet seeker asked me why i had taken him to such a place?
I was embarrassed and felt shame for being part of what had happened, and vowed never to take anyone there again.
I cant understand how that place still gets people going there, except for perhaps the fact that some people just don’t seem to be able to know a fraud when they see one. You read his story and get respect for him and then you go there and are totally insulted and laughed at and disappointed.
We are in the Kali Yuga the age of darkness and ignorance and superstition where the dhamma is being forgotten and abused for personal gain – and where people dont even notice what is happening due to seeking personal gains the easy way.
This saddens me greatly and offends me. That samnak offends me a lot and is an insult to the good heartedness and genuine respec which farang have to the Ajarns.
It is an insult to the ancient tradition that an Ajarn can behave in this manner, and proves that there is no wisdom in that samnak at all. Farang are not stupid, but this samnak seems to think we are all both rich and stupid.
In the end the fellow will end up being defrocked i am sure – you cant ride the gravy train forever – the last stop will always arrive.
300 thousand baht!
wow what a cheek.
in reply to willy;

Hi all, regarding that certain Ajarn that is mentioned I myself experienced what can only be described as a western greed for money when looking to have a another piece done, thankfully I laughed it off and went to Wat Bang Phra which turned out to be an excellent experience much to my Thai wife annoyance at another SakYant tattoo.
So don’t let peoples greed overshadow your experience. It very seldom in Thailand that you will cross such people so laugh it off and take your travels elsewhere
