Modernity counteracts magic tattoos in Cambodia

Excerpt from an article in the Daily telegraph by Kounila Keo, in Phnom Penh
“I do have one tattoo of a python on my right upper-arm but it’s for beauty, not magic,” says the 30 year-old from the outskirts of Cambodia’s capital.

“That’s because I can’t find anywhere in my town to get a magic tattoo.”

Over many centuries Cambodians have endured numberless hours of procedures to obtain hand-drawn mystical tattoos believed to give them magical powers, but the tradition appears to be fading in this increasingly modern country.

Miech Ponn, adviser on mores and customs at Cambodia’s Buddhist Institute, says magic tattoos are believed to bring good luck or popularity but are mostly used by soldiers seeking to become invisible to enemies or repel bullets.

“Tattoos were really popular among Cambodian men in the past. Almost every Cambodian male was tattooed,” Miech Ponn says.

These days, he adds, superstitious people in rural areas are usually the ones who believe in magic.

“Until now science can’t break this superstition. I don’t know why it cannot.”

Chan Trea, a tattooist, says that the the number of customers seeking him out in the belief they will obtain special powers has dwindled over the past decade.

“Usually, the Cambodian customers are police, soldiers, and fighters like boxers and martial artists,” Chan Trea says.

“But there is a decrease of people coming for magical reasons. I guess, in the future, things like magic will be very rare in this country.”

Finally a Slideshow gallery of just tattooos of the work of Ruesi (Rishi) Ajarn thoy Dabos of Wat Tong Nai temple.

Notice a grand difference in the line work between those devotees who can afford to donate a little more and those more empoverished Thai devotees, who sometimes have no more to offer than a hundred baht or so, and often come in queues of 30 people or so.. Ajarn Thoy loves to give his best and devote time to a tattoo when he makes sak-yant, but sometimes cannot afford to give in to the crowds of young penniless Thai youth who appear wanting his magic. So he tattoos at speeds according to the limits of his overheads and the income recieved. he al;ways gives full spell magic and blessings when he makes his katas and casts his spells, but if you wish for the best quality work, then yo should understand that even Ajarn Thoy has living costs and must keep his income and time schedule in context with each other.
Examine the difference between various designs and see how a half decent donation/offering is worth the effort to make.

This videoclip was sent to me (im not sure by who, but thanks anyway), which i then re-edited and put up speech ballons with the various Katas on each line of Ajarn Thoy’s version of Gao Yord. This version is extremely interesting and beautiful because of the increased number of different Katas in it. Ajarn Thoy is anyway famous for his extensive Katas whilst blessing his devotees.
